Pushing the Stupidity Envelope
Yes, a group of Republicans are indeed doing just that, by putting up billboards claiming that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican.
I wasn't alive when King was, or during the Civil Rights Movement. But I do read, and I read sources at the time; the Democratic Party lost the White Southern Conservative Voter in 1965 when a Democratic Congress and a Democratic President (LBJ) pushed through the Civil Rights Act, the final major step in putting this nation on the right path toward racial harmony (ie, by treating everyone as a human being through edict).
Rev. King worked in concert with many Democratic politicians and grassroots organizers during the Civil Rights movement until his assassination. This is one of many lies told by Republican pundits and activists because, it is my belief, they do not acknowledge reality, and rather prefer living in ideology.
Oh, and here's Rudy Giuliani peddling lies about China drilling off the coast of Florida with the Cubans. Why? To manipulate people into voting against their interests (a healthy ecological coastline) and support offshore drilling. And here is Fox News openly distorting a vote from Obama about the Gen. Petraeus ad condemnation in the senate. And here is Cliff May (conservative pundit) creating a scarecrow argument about the motivations of liberal bloggers at Dailykos. The liars out there spewing their nonsense- it takes a critical audience to detect it and reject it.
The greatest sin for any philosopher in Ancient Greece was to knowingly teach lies, because the entire pursuit of philosophy was finding truth. Our country was founded by philosophes and humanists who held these values highly. Is it any wonder that the worst Americans are those that lie?
